Christmastime is here and with comes many delightful (and decadent) treats. Garner family dentist Dr. Adam Moore encourages you to enjoy the many treats of the season but to practice moderation as well. Many holiday foods can damage enamel or cause serious staining when consumed in excess, making it important that you choose wisely when visiting the dessert table.
Five of the worst culprits for tooth staining are:
- Dyed frostings
- Colored candies
- Dark berries
- Coffee
- Red wine
These foods and beverages impact teeth through their colors and high acidity, allowing them to damage enamel while causing surface discoloration. Your best defense against these damages is brushing and flossing – but be sure to wait 30 minutes after consumption to allow enamel softened by highly acidic foods to harden again.
If your teeth become discolored this holiday season, Dr. Moore can help. We offer a range of teeth whitening options that can be used alone or in combination to restore a bright and white smile. If staining is below the surface or the result of enamel loss, we can discuss options such as porcelain veneers to help provide you with the bright, white, and beautiful smile you deserve.
