The most common type of dental implant is the root form. This implant is inserted directly into the jawbone where it replaces a missing tooth’s root. In so doing, root form dental implants are able to prevent changes to the structure of the jaw that occur when a root is missing. This type of dental implant is also best at restoring complete biting and chewing function.
If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to learn which type of dental implant is right for you, please contact Moore Family Dentistry online or call our Garner, North Carolina office at (919) 772-1811 today to schedule your initial consultation with our experienced implant dentist.
Dental Implant Options
Root form dental implants offer the strongest and most reliable solution for tooth replacement, but placing them requires sufficient jawbone for support. When the jaw is too narrow or shallow, bone grafting can be done to improve the chances of a successful root form implant placement, although this option is neither attractive nor suitable in every case.
If you are not a good candidate for a root form implant, Dr. Moore may recommend another option such as:
- Plate form dental implants – narrower than root form, plate form options still offer many of the benefits provided by dental implants
- Subperiosteal dental implants – placed underneath the gums but above the jaw, subperiosteal implants are more reliable than dentures and dental bridges, but may not offer all of the benefits provided by plate and root form alternatives
