At Moore Family Dentistry, we make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, sometimes tooth extractions are necessary. By performing tooth extractions, we may be able to treat a variety of illnesses and prevent complex dental problems. If Dr. Moore and his team do recommend a tooth extraction in 2020, it’s likely for one of these reasons:
- Your tooth is broken or decayed and cannot be fixed with a root canal or another treatment.
- You’ve reached an advanced stage of gum disease and extraction is necessary to save your gums and your teeth.
- You are preparing for an orthodontic treatment and must remove one or multiple teeth to ensure optimal results.
- Your wisdom teeth have erupted and have caused pain or compromise the health of surrounding teeth.
How Tooth Extraction Works
Despite the fact that patients are often intimidated by the tooth extraction process, it’s a fairly simple process. Prior to your extraction, you can expect Dr. Moore to thoroughly clean your mouth and numb the area. He may also sedate you if you’re worried about pain and want to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible.
Next, he’ll use special tools to loose your tooth in its socket. As soon as your tooth has been loosened, he’ll use dental forceps to grasp it by the root firmly and pull it out. Dr. Moore will end the treatment by cleaning the area and suturing it shut. In most cases, tooth extraction takes about five minutes per tooth to complete. You’ll be sent home with aftercare instructions immediately after the procedure.
